The Story of Pyramus

6/19/2018

The story of Pyramus and Thisbe is an ancient Near-Eastern myth.
Their romance, appearing first in the Roman poet Ovid's book of Metamorphosis, has made appearances in visual and literary art ever since.
Shakespeare later retells a version of their ill-fated romance in his A Midsummer Night's Dream.
In the story, Pyramus and Thisbe fall in love, but their families forbid their union. So they plan a secret rendezvous outside of the city. However, a series of unfortunate occurrences lead to their deaths underneath the shade of a mulberry tree.
To commemorate their love, as a final wish, Thisbe asks the gods to forever change the colour of the mulberry fruit to red as a memento of their love.
I had always loved the aetiological form of the story and how the story had in it a desire to memorialise something forever. I feel that pictures can do the same (perhaps a bit less tragically!) and hence, I kept the lover as a namesake and their tree as a symbol.
